Diabetes Treatment Cost in China for International Patients
There is no single national “diabetes treatment package” price in China. A useful estimate depends on your diabetes type, current treatment, complications, hospital, tests, devices, procedure and length of stay. Public Chinese price lists can show the cost of individual services, but they are not the same as an international-patient quote.
Diabetes Treatment Costs in China: At a Glance
China has medical-service price schedules and hospital charges, but not one official nationwide package price for an international patient with diabetes.
HbA1c appears at RMB 70 in a 2025 Jinan municipal hospital price disclosure. Other facilities can publish different prices.
Shanghai’s official public-hospital schedule lists continuous dynamic glucose monitoring at a maximum price of RMB 200 per day, including materials.
Commercial stem-cell packages are not ordinary diabetes care and should never be compared directly with public test or endocrinology prices.
Price examples and public sources last checked: September 2026.
Why There Is No Single Diabetes Treatment Price in China
“Diabetes treatment” can mean anything from a blood test and specialist review to intensive inpatient management, a glucose-monitoring programme, complication treatment, metabolic surgery or an experimental cell-therapy protocol. A single headline price hides those differences.
| Cost layer | What can be included | How the price is determined |
|---|---|---|
| Basic evaluation | Endocrinology consultation, HbA1c, glucose, kidney/liver function, lipids, urine testing. | Individual hospital / local service prices. |
| Diabetes classification | C-peptide, pancreatic autoantibodies and additional testing when diagnosis or residual beta-cell function needs clarification. | Tests ordered for the specific case. |
| Technology | CGM, insulin pump, automated insulin-delivery evaluation and device-related supplies. | Device, brand, consumables and whether the hospital supplies or only evaluates it. |
| Complications | Kidney, cardiovascular, eye, neuropathy, diabetic-foot or other specialist work-up and treatment. | Diagnosis, severity, admission length and procedures. |
| Metabolic / bariatric treatment | Preoperative assessment, surgery, anaesthesia, admission and follow-up for selected people with type 2 diabetes and obesity. | Procedure and hospital-specific quote. |
| Experimental / cell therapy | Registered clinical research or a separately marketed self-pay treatment. | Protocol-specific; never assume a commercial package equals a published study. |
Official Chinese Public-Healthcare Price Examples
| Service | Published example | Source / context | What it tells an international patient |
|---|---|---|---|
| HbA1c | RMB 70 | Jinan municipal hospital price disclosure, 2025. | A basic laboratory item can be inexpensive; the total evaluation still depends on all tests and specialist services ordered. |
| C-peptide release test, 5 measurements | RMB 250 | Jinan municipal hospital price disclosure, 2025. | Useful context for patients researching residual insulin production, but it is not automatically required for every case. |
| Portable glucose test | RMB 8 | Jinan municipal public listings. | Shows the difference between a single test price and a full treatment programme. |
| Continuous dynamic glucose monitoring | RMB 200/day | Shanghai public-hospital maximum price, effective from October 15, 2025; schedule states monitoring for 72 hours with at least 288 readings per 24 hours and materials included. | A useful public benchmark for a defined service — not the retail price of buying a CGM system to take home. |
China’s National Healthcare Security Administration continues to standardize medical-service pricing categories, while local authorities and public institutions publish or implement specific charges. For international patients, Parkmega treats public price lists as reference points and asks the receiving hospital for the actual case quote.
Type 1 Diabetes Treatment Cost in China
The cost question becomes more relevant for international travel when a patient needs a difficult-case review, pump/CGM assessment, complication management, transplant-related evaluation or access screening for experimental islet/cell research.
Insulin + monitoring
Medication and device costs depend heavily on the exact insulin, CGM/pump system, supplies and whether you are buying long-term treatment locally or only receiving a hospital assessment in China.
Difficult control / severe hypoglycemia
A specialist review may add C-peptide, antibody testing, CGM data analysis and screening for diabetes complications. Ask for the test list before travel.
Islet / cell-therapy research
There is no standard self-pay “type 1 cure price.” Trial costs, covered protocol items and patient travel costs must be checked against the exact study.
Type 2 Diabetes Treatment Cost in China
Type 2 diabetes costs can range from a relatively simple outpatient review to complex treatment involving obesity, kidney or cardiovascular disease. For many well-controlled patients, travelling abroad only for routine medication adjustment is unlikely to be the most useful reason for a China trip.
Outpatient diabetes review
- HbA1c and fasting glucose
- Kidney function and urine albumin assessment
- Lipid / cardiovascular risk review
- Medication review: metformin, GLP-1, SGLT2, insulin and others as appropriate
- CGM or device review when useful
Cases that can become much more expensive
- Diabetic kidney disease
- Cardiovascular complications
- Diabetic foot infection / surgery
- Hospital admission for uncontrolled diabetes
- Metabolic / bariatric surgery
- Experimental or regenerative protocols
How Much Does Stem-Cell Therapy for Diabetes Cost in China?
Before comparing two “stem-cell” prices, ask whether they even describe the same thing: cell type, manufacturing process, dose, number of administrations, trial/ethics ID, hospital, physician, inclusion criteria and follow-up.
Already have a stem-cell quote from China?
Send the PDF, hospital name and price. We can compare the offer with published research and registered trials before you pay or travel.

Are Diabetes Clinical Trials in China Free?
For example, ClinicalTrials.gov currently lists the Phase I RGB-5088 islet-cell study NCT06731218 at Tianjin First Center Hospital as recruiting for selected adults with type 1 diabetes. The registry lists medical eligibility criteria and study contacts, but it does not establish a standard international-patient travel budget.
Potentially protocol-covered
Investigational product and study-required procedures may be covered according to the exact protocol and site policy. This must be confirmed.
Potential patient costs
Flights, lodging, visa-related expenses, local transport, interpretation, additional care and companion costs may remain outside the study.
What Else Can an International Patient Pay For?
Even when a Chinese public price for a medical service is low, a foreign patient’s real trip budget can be much higher. The hospital invoice is only one part of the total.
Before admission
- Medical-record translation
- Remote case review if charged
- Repeat tests requested by the hospital
- Deposit or pre-authorization where required
During treatment
- Hospital / physician charges
- Interpreter or international-patient services
- Medicines and consumables
- Extra inpatient days if medically needed
Travel budget
- Flights
- Hotel / apartment
- Local transport
- Companion expenses
- Return visits or extended follow-up
Not every hospital charges a separate “international patient fee,” and not every case needs all of these items. They should be confirmed before travel rather than added as a generic percentage.
How to Get a Real Diabetes Treatment Quote From China
Send the diagnosis
Type 1, type 2 or another diabetes classification, year diagnosed and the main reason you are considering China.
Add recent records
HbA1c, current medication/insulin, C-peptide if relevant, device data and complication reports.
Define the treatment route
Routine endocrinology, difficult-case review, complications, metabolic treatment, trial screening or a specific offer you want checked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers to the main cost questions international patients ask before sending records.
There is no single national package price. Cost depends on diabetes type, hospital, tests, medication or devices, complications, procedures and length of stay. Official Chinese public listings show some individual services at relatively low prices, but an international-patient treatment estimate must be based on a specific case and hospital.
A public price schedule may show the charge for one defined test or service. An overseas case can require several tests, specialist reviews, an international department, interpretation, admission, medicines, procedures or additional follow-up. Public prices are useful benchmarks, not a complete foreign-patient package.
There is no fixed Type 1 package price. Routine costs depend on insulin, CGM or pump systems and monitoring. A China medical trip can add specialist evaluation, C-peptide or antibody testing, complication work-up, device assessment or experimental-trial screening. A hospital-specific estimate is needed.
It depends on whether the patient needs a routine outpatient review, medication and metabolic management, complication treatment, hospitalization or metabolic surgery. A simple review can involve low-cost public laboratory services, while complex kidney, cardiovascular, diabetic-foot or surgical cases require a separate hospital quote.
There is no official national stem-cell diabetes price. Parkmega has seen commercial facilitator offers in 2026 commonly advertised around USD 12,000–25,000, but this is a market observation rather than a hospital tariff. A commercial package must not be assumed to match a registered trial or published cell-therapy protocol.
Do not assume the entire trip is free. A protocol may cover the investigational treatment and required study procedures, but travel, accommodation, translation, additional care and companion costs may fall outside the study. Foreign-patient acceptance and cost responsibility must be confirmed with the study site.
Send your diagnosis, recent HbA1c, current medication or insulin regimen, C-peptide and antibodies when relevant, device information, complication records and the treatment goal. A meaningful estimate can then be requested from a named hospital for the specific tests, procedures and expected stay.
