Independent China Cost Data: The Best Starting Point
The study covered lung, breast, colorectal, esophageal, liver and gastric cancers across 84 hospitals in 17 provinces. Relapse/metastasis was the most expensive treatment phase and advanced stage increased cost.
In adjusted analyses, specialised hospitals were associated with about 30% higher direct medical costs than general hospitals. Eastern and southern regions were also higher than northern regions, while western regions were lower. These are population-level associations, not a rule for a specific hospital.
Important for international patients: independent studies measure the economic burden borne by patients
in China’s domestic health system. They are stronger evidence than travel-marketplace lists, but they still do not answer
“What will this hospital charge me as a foreign self-pay patient?” That requires a case-specific international estimate.
CAR-T Cost in China: Product Price Is Not the Full Bill
CAR-T is one area where published product prices are easier to verify than generic “cancer package” prices.

Satri-cel in 2026: A Current Price With a Very Specific Indication
Chinese government reporting says satricabtagene autoleucel was approved for CLDN18.2-positive, HER2-negative unresectable advanced gastric or gastroesophageal-junction adenocarcinoma after progression following at least two prior lines of treatment.
Shanghai’s official information platform reported this price on 20 August 2026 during commercial rollout. It is a product/course price reference, not automatically the complete hospital invoice.
Evidence context: in the randomised phase 2 CT041-ST-01 trial, median progression-free survival was
3.25 months with satri-cel versus 1.77 months with physician’s-choice treatment. Grade 3 or higher treatment-emergent
adverse events occurred in 99% versus 63%; cytokine release syndrome occurred in 95% of satri-cel recipients.
Proton and Heavy-Ion Therapy: Keep the RMB 278,000 Figure in Its Historical Context
China’s National Health Commission reported in 2016 that a typical radiation course at the newly opened Shanghai Proton
and Heavy Ion Center cost nearly RMB 278,000. That is a strong primary-source historical reference.
It is not sufficient evidence that every SPHIC course still costs RMB 278,000 in 2026.
